CIS’s Fundamentals of Leadership & Supervision program
Fundamentals of Leadership & Supervision is a program focused on organizational leadership, innovation, and management. The curriculum helps you develop the skills to become a leader in a national or global organization. Students in this program gain hands-on management and leadership experience. They are also trained to handle complex global teams.
Bob Wood
Bob Wood is a Senior Advisor with The McChrystal Group and a mentor to chief executives. He has more than 40 years of experience in business and leadership. He was previously Chairman, President, and CEO of Chemtura Corporation. Bob spent his first three-quarters of his career at the Dow Chemical Company. There he served as Business Group President and a member of the Corporate Operating Board. He also has served on the boards of numerous public companies.
Bob Wood’s school
Bob Wood attended a different school of leadership than most people today. During his high school years, he only participated in track and field when he was asked by his coach. In his freshman year, he ran the mile only because coach Joe Daniel required freshmen to run the event. Despite his lack of experience, Wood’s dedication paid off. He went on to become a four-time state champion in the mile and became one of Wyoming’s most influential athletes.
Effective leaders
One of the fundamentals of effective leadership is having a vision. An effective leader creates a clear vision for the organization and inspires its current workers to work toward this vision. The vision also helps attract new talent to the organization. Vision is not a learnable skill; it is innate. Many great leaders in history had visions.
Communication
Effective communication is one of the fundamental elements of leadership. It is closely related to effective performance in the workplace. To lead effectively, you must be a good communicator and use that skill in all of your relationships. However, not all leaders are good communicators. In fact, 57% of employees say they don’t receive clear directions from their managers and 69% of managers say they don’t communicate well with their teams.
Vision
A vision is an important part of leadership, and a good leader must be able to articulate it. The vision must be both clear and meaningful to everyone involved. The vision can come from many sources and should be a result of the collective efforts of everyone. Creating a vision is not an easy task, as it involves both the heart and mind.
Empowerment
The concept of empowerment is a key ingredient of successful leadership. It is a process through which a leader helps others to identify their own strengths and contribute to the final result. Empowerment is a continuous process and must be reviewed regularly. A good leader will not only empower others but will also check to make sure they are being effective. For example, President Ronald Reagan understood that empowerment must be followed by regular checks. Empowerment should be communicated clearly, and the leader should encourage team members to contribute and incorporate their own ideas.
Adaptability
Adaptability is one of the most important aspects of a leadership style. An adaptive leader embraces differences and encourages creativity. They also roll with the punches and are willing to learn from their mistakes. Bumps in the road are inevitable and necessary for growth. Adaptable leaders embrace diversity and seek input from team members.
